Court rebukes Minister Konda Surekha over defamatory remarks against KTR
Court orders removal of defamatory remarks made by Konda Surekha on social media platforms.
HYDERABAD: In a notable legal development, the Nampally Court issued a sharp reprimand to Telangana Minister Konda Surekha over her remarks in a Rs 100 crore defamation case filed by BRS Working President K Taraka Rama Rao. The court criticised Surekha’s comments as "highly objectionable," remarking that such statements, especially from a woman minister, were surprising and could negatively impact society.
Following this, the court ordered that all media outlets, including social media platforms like YouTube, Facebook, and Google, remove her statements about KTR. The court further directed that Konda Surekha refrain from making similar remarks in the future.
This instance marks a significant first in Indian legal history, with the court displaying an intense response in a defamation case involving a minister. Surekha has previously made contentious remarks, prompting objections from the Election Commission as well. Despite past warnings, KTR has been vocal about not tolerating such attacks, warning of potential legal actions against baseless allegations.
In a detailed deposition, KTR expressed his frustration with Surekha’s statements, describing some as too indecent to be repeated in open court. He argued that her comments aimed to tarnish his personal and political reputation, and highlighted that they included unacceptable insinuations about him and another female public figure. KTR explained that these allegations were deliberate attempts to defame him due to his success in Telangana politics.
KTR elaborated on his political journey, highlighting his dedication to the Telangana movement and his commitment to public service. He noted his years of service, awards received for his work as a young politician, and contributions to state development as BRS party's Working President, MLA, and minister. He shared that these achievements had earned him recognition both nationally and internationally, cementing his reputation as a respected leader.
He added that Surekha’s allegations, aired on television and social media, were baseless and intended solely to damage his reputation. KTR provided evidence, including media clippings and social media posts, as part of his complaint, urging the court to consider criminal action against Surekha’s conduct.
