Flood threat looms over Osman Sagar, Himayat Sagar as inflows rise
Heavy inflows raise water levels in Hyderabad’s twin reservoirs, prompting gate openings and warnings to low-lying areas.
HYDERABAD: Heavy inflows from upper regions have raised water levels in Hyderabad’s twin reservoirs, Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar.
The current water level in Himayat Sagar has reached 1,762 feet against its full capacity of 1,764 feet. In Osman Sagar, the water level stood at 1,789.9 feet, just below its full level of 1,790 feet. In response, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) opened two gates at Osman Sagar, releasing water downstream, with plans to lift more gates at Himayat Sagar later today.
As a precaution, authorities alerted residents in low-lying areas, particularly those near the Musi River. The heavy rains on Tuesday exacerbated the situation, with parts of the city experiencing flooding due to intense downpours lasting two to three hours. Several areas were severely affected, including Uppal, Habsiguda, Tarnaka, Secunderabad, Ameerpet, Jubilee Hills, and Banjara Hills. Strong winds accompanying the rain caused trees to fall in multiple locations, creating traffic jams and disrupting normal life.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast moderate to heavy rainfall in the coming 24 hours due to a low-pressure system developing over the Bay of Bengal, which may affect various parts of the city.
