HYDERABAD: BRS Working President K Taraka Rama Rao has strongly criticised Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, accusing his government of accumulating an unprecedented debt of Rs 80,500 crore within just 10 months. KTR raised concerns over the lack of visible development or fulfilment of election promises despite the mounting loans.

KTR questioned how the government could borrow such large amounts without delivering new irrigation projects or significant welfare schemes like farm loan waivers or Rythu Bharosa. He further inquired where the Rs 80,000 crore had gone and whether it was being funneled into the pockets of major contractors or used to pay off commissions.

In a tweet, KTR referenced Revanth Reddy's past criticism of borrowing practices, pointing out the inconsistency between earlier statements condemning debt and the current government's reliance on loans. He highlighted that under the BRS administration, loans were used to build essential infrastructure and solve long-standing issues, while alleging that the current government’s debt had no clear address or purpose.

The criticism came as the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced that Telangana’s government recently borrowed another Rs 1,000 crore, bringing the total debt under Revanth Reddy’s administration to Rs 74,495 crore in just 315 days. This follows a series of loans taken last month, including Rs 4,500 crore in three installments and an additional Rs 2,000 crore on October 1. KTR warned that the escalating debt without tangible results poses a serious risk to Telangana's future and accused the current government of using loans for personal gain rather than state development.

KTR further added that, apart from the direct loans from the RBI, the government had also secured another Rs 25,000 crore through guarantees provided to corporations and autonomous bodies.
