HYDERABAD: BRS Working President K Taraka Rama Rao has set a deadline for the Congress-led state government to complete a Backward Classes (BC) census by November 10, accusing it of failing to implement key promises.

During a press conference at Telangana Bhavan on Wednesday, KTR criticised the Congress for not fulfilling its BC declaration, which was announced during Assembly elections in Kamareddy.

KTR demanded 42% reservations for BCs and pressed the Congress to initiate a comprehensive caste-based census. He warned that if the government failed to meet the November 10 deadline, direct protests would be launched. He also criticised the Congress for its promise of allocating Rs 1 lakh crore for BC welfare but allocating only Rs 8,000 crore in the state budget.

He further urged the government to introduce a BC sub-plan with financial allocations ranging from Rs 25,000 crore to Rs 35,000 crore. KTR also called for an increase in BC representation in local bodies and the establishment of a separate ministry for Most Backward Classes (MBCs). He noted that the current state cabinet has only two BC ministers and accused the Congress of neglecting vulnerable groups, including weavers and fishermen, who have faced economic hardships.

KTR emphasised that the BRS would continue its fight for BC rights, underlining that nearly 70 promises were made under the BC declaration. He assured that his party would remain a steadfast ally for Telangana’s weaker sections. On the topic of simultaneous elections, or Jamili, KTR urged the central government to provide clarity and questioned whether all state governments would be dissolved for such elections. He stated that BRS leaders would convene to discuss the issue and reach a final decision.
