Pochampally Ikat GI tag renewed for 10 years

HYDERABAD: The Pochampally Ikat Geographical Indication (GI) tag, which expired on December 14, 2023, was renewed on Friday. Pochampally IKAT, India's first handloom product, was registered with GI Application No. 4 in 2004.
The renewal application was submitted on December 15, 2003, and according to the GI act, the GI must be renewed every ten years in order to be valid.
GIs, like trademarks, are perpetual and only need to be renewed every ten years from the date of filing. The GI application was about to expire, and early action by the Registered Proprietor helped in the renewal of the GI for Pochampally Ikat.
Subhajit Saha, GI Agent and Legal head & IPR at the Resolute Group facilitated the renewal of Pochampally IKAT. He also mentioned that the onus for the timely renewal must be with the registered proprietor, and they need to act on time to avoid any lapses and surcharges.
He further mentioned that the Logo was also filed separately as it was not part of the GI application in those days and hence the GI logo of the Pochampally IKAT logo will also be submitted for renewal soon.

Saha added, "India has a potential for more than 15,000 Geographical Indications items, and that we have only just begun the path, which must be carried ahead with the help of all stakeholders." He believes that in the next three years, India would have 5000+ applications, up from the present 1158 applications filed and 530 registered by the GI registry.
