HYDERABAD: The Annaram (Saraswathi) barrage which is part of the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project (KLIP) located in Mahdevpur mandal is intact and there is nothing to worry about its stability, said project executive engineer A Yadagiri.

In a statement on Wednesday, he clarified that the project engineers as part of their regular maintenance work undertook steps to arrest seepage of water at two places by keeping sandbags at the 38th vent, the visuals of the process were made viral in different social media groups.

He said that the Annaram Barrage was constructed with 66 gates with a full reservoir level of 119 meters and a capacity of 10.87 TMC. “As described in the videos being circulated the swirling water is not Bunga or leakage and it is seepage which is normal in permeable foundations. It is noticed that fresh water is coming out which is in permissible limits and no sand is coming out of it,” he said.

Congress workers entered illegally

Annaram Barrage DEE Ravi Chandra who was at the spot reported that while the workers were engaged in routine maintenance work like arresting the seepage at gate number 38 at around 10 am, about 20 members belonging to the Congress party of Annaram village entered over the trunnion level walkway gate without taking permission of I&CAD Department and came to gate no 38 and they have taken videos and photos and circulated to outside people describing it as Bunga.

Yadagiri added that the work was a routine part of project management for seepage observed by our DEE and field engineers about three days back and immediately they undertook protective measures as part of maintenance.

“As long as seepage is within permissible limits and there is no carriage of soil or sand particles, it is safe. As per our observation, there is no serious condition as described in videos being aired on YouTube, sandbags are being laid as a precautionary remedial measure. We are reducing the storage levels in both Annaram and Sundilla barrages as a precautionary measure,” he concluded.
