Renowned heart surgeon Dasari Prasada Rao honoured with Lifetime Achievement Award

HYDERABAD: Dasari Prasada Rao, a renowned heart surgeon and former director of NIMS, Hyderabad, received the Lifetime Achievement Award on Thursday for his distinguished service to cardiovascular and thoracic surgery.

Tamilnadu Minister for Medical and Health MA.Subramanian, who was the chief guest at the 69th annual conference of the Indian Association of Cardiovascular Surgeons (heart surgeons of India), attended by thousands of surgeons, bestowed the award on Dr. Prasada Rao in the presence of Dr.Zile Singh Meharwal, President of the Association, Dr. C.S.Hiremath, Secretary of the Association, and other dignitaries.

Dr. Prasada Rao emphasised the need to establish medical and health institutions to serve the large number of the suffering public, irrespective of the cast, class, creed, religion and region at differential rate of tariff either in private sector or public sector or through public private partneship.

He said medical eduation, research and scientific communication shoud be rudimentary knowledge to promote scientific temper among the medical professionals and scientific communiation skills among the general public.

Dr. Prasada Rao is a world-renowned cardiac surgeon who specialises in coronary bypass surgery, heart valve surgery, and other heart procedures. He actively engaged in the building of institutions such as the accident and emergency hospital, speciality hospital, stem cell and bone marrow treatment centre at NIMS, Hyderabad.

He was responsible for acquiring 200 acres of land on the banks of Bibinagar Lake near Hyderabad for the development of NIMS University, which is recognized today as All India Institute of Medical Sciences. He was the founding Director of Care Group of Hospitals and the Principal Surgeon at Mediciti Hospital. He is designated as a Chief Cardiac Surgeon at Apollo Spectra Hospital in Ameerpet, Hyderabad. Dr. Prasada Rao received numerous honours, including the Padmasri in 2001.
