Republic Day fete: Telangana HC asks State govt to follow Centre’s directions
The High Court also observed that the State Government should organise the Republic Day parade, as has been the tradition with the exception of last year
HYDERABAD: The Telangana High Court on Wednesday asked the State Government to follow the directions of the Centre on Republic Day 2023 celebrations. The High Court also observed that the State Government should organise the Republic Day parade, as has been the tradition with the exception of last year.
The High Court ruling comes in the wake of speculative reports which claimed that the State Government, this year, would not be hosting an official Republic Day event. The news, though not confirmed by any official source, gained credence in view of a rift between Raj Bhavan and Pragathi Bhavan on a host of issues concerning the state’s administration.
Even in 2022, Governor Dr Tamilisai Soundararajan was confined to a flag-hoisting event organised on the premises of Raj Bhavan as the State Government desisted from hosting the Republic Day parade.
The latest development comes on the back of worsening relations between the Chief Minister and the Governor in the last few months. The State Government was aghast and miffed at the Governor sitting over more than half a dozen legislative bills for several months. The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) Government also accuses the Governor of crossing her constitutional periphery to interfere in the functioning of a democratically-elected government.
Now, with the High Court coming up with its observations on the Republic Day celebrations, it remains to be seen how the State Government will respond to it.
