HYDERABAD: Squarely blaming the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) Government in the State for the rain-induced devastation, Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) chief A Revanth Reddy demanded Rs 15,000 interim relief to every affected family and Rs 25 lakh to the kin of each one of those killed in the floods.

Speaking to media after visiting parts of the Malkajgiri Parliamentary constituency on Saturday the Congress MP said that he would soon submit a report on recent floods in Telangana to Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

“Many lost their lives due to the negligence of the State Government, preliminary reports confirmed that crops in over 10 lakh acres are damaged,” Revanth Reddy said, alleging that the State had been witnessing great devastation every year since the formation of the State nine years ago.

Blaming the ruling party leaders for the unabated encroachment of water bodies across the State, the TPCC chief said that illegal constructions inside the full tank level of ponds and lakes were the main reason for the floods.

Criticising the State Municipal and Urban Development Minister KT Rama Rao for the near flood-like situation in Hyderabad, Revanth Reddy said that the civic administration failed to prepare itself for the heavy rains, despite the weather department flashing warning signs.

“The Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao should have reviewed the situation and initiated precautionary steps. Now he must at least assess the damage and grant Rs 20,000 for the lands that were covered with the silt brought by the floods,” he said.

Alleging a tacit understanding between the BRS and the State Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Revanth Reddy wanted to know where was Union Minister G Kishan Reddy during and after the floods. “We have reports that the total damage to the State is around Rs 3,000 crore and the Centre must release Rs 1,000 crore as an immediate relief to the State,” Revanth demanded.

He also called upon the Congress party workers to undertake relief work in the rain and flood-affected areas.
