SC, ST Commission orders removal of Chief Warden at Basara IIIT over misconduct allegations

HYDERABAD: The SC and ST Commission visited Basara IIIT, uncovering significant issues related to the welfare of students, particularly concerning the conduct of Chief Warden Sridhar.

Students at the institute reported facing severe difficulties due to inadequate facilities and alleged misconduct by Sridhar. Following multiple complaints of inappropriate behaviour, the Commission directed his immediate removal from his position.

The Commission’s visit revealed a shortage of essential staff, with students highlighting the absence of enough caretakers and faculty. Specifically, there are only four caretakers responsible for around 6,000 female students, which raised serious concerns among the Commission officials, who expressed their dissatisfaction and ordered an increase in the number of caretakers.

Students also reported that the institute is suffering from a shortage of faculty, negatively affecting the quality of their education. The SC and ST Commission questioned the lack of preparation, especially since prior notice of their visit had been given. The absence of Chief Warden Sridhar during the visit further aggravated the situation, prompting stern reactions from the officials.

Interim Vice Chancellor Venkataramana responded to the Commission’s concerns, stating that the government is making efforts to recruit additional faculty to address the shortage. However, the immediate focus was on the multiple allegations against Chief Warden Sridhar, whose removal was ordered due to repeated reports of inappropriate behaviour towards female students.
