HYDERABAD: Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president Revanth Reddy has revealed that former All India Congress Committee (AICC) president Sonia Gandhi was moved by the sacrifice of students during the Telagana movement and decided to grant statehood.

Speaking at the 'Meet the Press' programme in Basheerbagh on Friday, Revanth said, "Everyone should recognise the fact that Telangana was formed because of Sonia Gandhi's initiative. Despite knowledge of the fact that the party will face backlash in Andhra Pradesh, Sonia Gandhi was inclined to grant Telangana statehood."

He added that Telangana became a reality only because of sacrifices of students and not because of KCR's fast-unto-death initiative.

Revanth Reddy told journalists that after formation of the State, it became impossible for the public to meet the Chief Minister which was not the case earlier.

"In the past, it was possible to appraise the Chief Minister about public issues. YS Rajasekhara Reddy, Roshaiah and Kiran Kumar Reddy used to receive requests from people directly. After the formation of Telangana, it has become impossible for the public to meet KCR. He even decided not to come to Secretariat," he alleged.

Questioning KCR on his promise of 'Golden Telangana', Revanth asked if anybody's life had improved in the State.

"Unemployed people who fought for Telangana are still suffering. Today, even if the Medigadda barrage is being washed away, the Government is not taking the issue seriously," he said.

On being asked about his plan for Telangana if they came to power, Revanth Reddy expressed confidence the Congress would successfully implement the six guarantees promised by the party.
