Telangana, Andhra Pradesh brace for severe heatwave in next three days

HYDERABAD: Telangana may experience a significant thunderstorm from May 6-8, offering relief from a 12-day-long intense heatwave, according to Telangana Weatherman.

Recalling the substantial thunderstorm in Telangana on May 29th night and May 31st afternoon in 2020, Telangana Weatherman T Balaji noted its occurrence after nine days of extreme heatwave due to Cyclone Amphan.

Comparing the 2020 heatwave followed by the thunderstorm trend, T Balaji said, "Massive storms lashed Telangana on those two days in the year 2020 after intense heatwave. Even now, it's been more than eight days of severe heatwave, with more than four days to go. So, it's no surprise that we may see a violent thunderstorm in Telangana during May 6-8, providing a much-needed respite from the 12-day massive heatwave. Overall, the severe heatwave is expected to end by May 6, with relief thereafter.'

• Sensitise people about sunburn and advise them to avoid going out between 11.00 am and 4.00 pm unless necessary.
• Use umbrellas, scarves, hats, or handkerchiefs when outdoors.
• Drink water frequently, especially during peak sun hours, and carry water when going out. Consume refreshing drinks like lemon juice, buttermilk, or coconut water.
• Install water stations at bus stands, roadsides, and intersections in every village.
• Provide primary treatment and transfer affected individuals to the nearest health center for further care.
• Take special care of vulnerable groups like infants, pregnant women, children, elderly, and sick individuals to prevent heat-related illnesses.
• Collaborate with the Medical Health Department to identify areas prone to heatstroke and fever outbreaks and ensure availability of ORS packets.
• Provide shade and potable water at work sites for laborers and make ORS packets accessible.
