HYDERABAD: The Telangana government has appointed Justice Madan Bhimarao Lokur, a retired Supreme Court judge, as the new chairman of the power inquiry commission. The commission was established to investigate alleged corruption and irregularities in the power sector during the previous K. Chandrashekar Rao-led government.

This appointment follows suggestions and advice from the Supreme Court regarding a petition filed by KCR about the commission's chairmanship. The state government announced it would appoint a new chairman for the commission, leading to the appointment of Justice Lokur on July 30.

Justice Lokur, who previously served as a Supreme Court judge and Chief Justice of the erstwhile Andhra Pradesh High Court, replaces Justice Narasimha Reddy, who was previously leading the inquiry.

A law graduate from Delhi University in 1977, Justice Lokur has extensive experience in civil, criminal, constitutional, revenue, and service laws. He practiced law in the Supreme Court and Delhi High Court before being appointed as Additional Solicitor General in 1998. He later served as an Additional Judge and then a Permanent Judge of the Delhi High Court. In 2010, he briefly held the position of Acting Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court. Justice Lokur was elevated to the Supreme Court of India in 2012.
