HYDERABAD: The Telangana High Court directed the state government on Thursday to establish clear rules for determining local eligibility in MBBS and BDS admissions.

The bench, headed by Chief Justice Alok Aradhe, ruled that while local candidates are eligible under the local quota, there are no proper guidelines to define who qualifies as local.

The court instructed the government to create appropriate guidelines and ensure that future admissions are based on these rules. It also directed Kaloji Narayana Rao University of Health Sciences to follow these guidelines for the ongoing admission process.

The ruling followed a hearing on the state government's order (GO) concerning local status in medical admissions. Several students had challenged the GO, which required students to have studied for four consecutive years before the NEET exam to be considered local. The petitioners argued that this violated Article 14 of the Constitution. The court, after considering the arguments, issued its directive for the government to frame clearer rules.
