HYDERABAD: At least 150 residents of Narsimhulugudem (Narsimhaguda) in Nidamanoor mandal of Nalgonda district (Telangana) were swiftly evacuated to safer places on Wednesday night following a breach to the left canal of Nagarjuna Sagar.

The left canal of the project suffered a breach near Mupparam village of the same mandal on Wednesday evening. Water is being discharged downstream from the Nagarjuna Sagar reservoir in view of the inflows from upstream. This is said to have increased the velocity of water in the canal leading to the breach at a weak spot.

As a result, paddy crop over a large extent was covered under a sheet of water even as the flooding posed grave danger to the adjoining villages. As the flood water entered Narsimhulugudem, alert police and civic authorities quickly evacuated the villagers to safer places on a war-footing. At least 150 villagers were shifted out of the village on Wednesday night. The police carried old people on wooden cots as part of their rescue efforts.
