Writing off Rs 10-lakh cr debt of dubious entities is a freebie: Kavitha
"Welfare of weaker societies is never a freebie, it is our social responsibility,"
HYDERABAD: "Welfare of weaker societies is never a freebie, it is our social responsibility," said Telangana Member of Legislative Council (MLC) Kalvakuntla Kavitha on Tuesday. Reacting on the trend terming welfare schemes as 'freebies,' Kavitha said that the center was putting pressure on the State Governments to stop these schemes.
In Telangana, around 250 welfare schemes were being implemented for the upliftment of the poor and downtrodden. It was the responsibility of the State to keep the best interests of the poor in mind, said Kavitha. She also said that the Central Government was waiving off loans of entities with dubious credentials.
"I believe a 'freebie' is what the BJP government has done; writing off a 10-lakh crore debt of dubious agencies," she said.
The ex-MP said, "India is a diverse country with people from all backgrounds. It is the government's responsibility to help the weaker communities and break the cycle of poverty. State Governments are working towards it and the Central government should not put any hindrances in that process," she added.
