HYDERABAD: Hyderabad MP and AIMIM President Asaduddin Owaisi announced that Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR) promised him that the State Government would categorically reject the decisions taken by the Central Government to break the unity of the people, and as part of that, they would be opposing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill.

A delegation led by Owaisi comprising representatives of All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) and members of other religious organisations met KCR to submit a representation to oppose the proposed Uniform Civil Code.

In a letter to KCR, the AIMPLB said, "The UCC is an open violation of fundamental rights guaranteed under Articles 25 and 29 of the Constitution. It will destroy India's diversity and pluralism, and will be a majoritarian step that is bound to alienate minorities."

The AIMPLB urged KCR to vehemently oppose the UCC, and said that it would not only negatively impact minorities, but also pluralism within the majority community, adivasis and other tribal communities. In its letter, the AIMPLB said that the UCC would impose uniformity on India's diverse cultures, and would violate the right of every section of society to preserve its culture. The board also said that the UCC would be unworkable in practice, and would lead to conflicts between different communities.

Emerging from the meeting, Owaisi said that KCR had promised to oppose the UCC and also requested Andhra Pradesh Chief MInister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy to endorse the same.
