HYDERABAD: Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) supremo and Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao has decided to support Margaret Alva's candidacy for the post of Vice-President of India. She is contesting as the nominee of the combined opposition.

Accordingly, all the 16 MPs of the TRS will vote in favour of Margaret Alva in the election to be conducted on Saturday (August 6). As directed by KCR, TRS Parliamentary Party Leader K Keshav Rao has released a statement to this effect.

Alva is expected to meet the TRS MPs on Friday evening as part of her campaign to drum up support for her candidacy.

Margaret Alva is a senior Congress leader and a former Union minister. She had also served as the governor of Rajasthan in the past. The NDA has fielded West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar as its candidate for the Vice-President post.

The TRS had also thrown its weight behind opposition candidate Yashwant Sinha in the recently held elections for the post of President of India. Droupadi Murmu, as the NDA nominee, won the election comfortably and was later sworn in the highest constitutional position of the country. In the process, she became the first tribal to become the President and the second woman to assume the highest office.
