World AIDS day - know the causes of spread and prevention methods
Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) is a life-threatening disease, caused by excessive presence of HIV
Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) breaks the immune system and body's ability to fight disease
It takes about 8-10 years for untreated HIV to turn into AIDS
HIV in the body can be suppressed by medication but can't be completely cured
The virus does not spread through kissing, hugging, sharing food or things or basic physical contact
HIV spreads through tranfer of blood, breastfeeding or sexual contact only
There is preventive medication which can be taken in case of possible exposure to HIV. However, it is not 100% effective.
The use of condoms is proven to be most effective in preventing AIDS through sexual contact
There are more than 40 vaccines being developed for prevention of HIV
It is advisable to get a medical test for HIV once every year
