Faulty laptop: Lenovo Group ordered to refund Rs 50,099, fined Rs 15,000
Lenovo Group was ordered by the Telangana consumer court to refund Rs 50,099, the cost of a purchased laptop
HYDERABAD: Lenovo Group was ordered by the Telangana consumer court to refund Rs 50,099, the cost of a purchased laptop. The tech company was also fined an amount of Rs 10,000 as compensation for the mental agony, inconvenience and hardship caused to the complainant and Rs 5,000 towards the cost of litigation.
Pratham Raj Mathur, a student, said that his laptop suffered a snag with its camera within 10 days of purchasing. He further said that after raising a complaint, a technician was sent for repair but he only ended up damaging the screen of the laptop during the service. Another technician who was sent by the company for a second service also failed to repair the laptop. As the issue was not resolved even after multiple requests, the complainant registered a case with the consumer court.
Lenovo Group defended itself and said that the complaint was false and baseless as the complainant failed to mention machine details while requesting a service from the Lenovo Group. They further added that there was no deficiency in services provided to the complainant as the organization always ensured customer satisfaction. They further sought the dismissal of the case stating that the organisation, having a global image, would not commit such acts.
The court, hearing both parties, said that the tech company had not rectified the defect nor replaced the product and therefore, the carelessness of the organisation amounted to unfair trade practice and deficiency in providing services. Thus, the court fined the Lenovo Group and ordered them to refund the purchased amount.
