Lucky's Biriyani House ordered to refund extra Rs 5, fined Rs 5,000

HYDERABAD: Lucky's Biriyani House in Tilak Nagar Hyderabad was ordered by the Telangana Consumer court to refund the amount of Rs 5.50 to the complainant which was additionally charged for purchasing mineral water. The court also directed the restaurant to pay Rs 5,000 as compensation for mental agony, trauma and pain suffered by the complainant.

Chilukuri Vamsi along with his friends went to the Biriyani House to have dinner. The complainant claimed that the restaurant charged an extra Rs 5 when they had purchased one litre Ekam Mineral Water Bottle that costs Rs 20. The complainant said that though he refused to pay the extra charges, the biriyani house compelled him and his friends. The complainant asserted that the restaurant adopted unfair trade practices and hence approached the court for justice.

Though notices were sent to the biriyani house, they were returned unclaimed and unanswered. Moreover, they were also absent on the day of the trial.

The court, during the trial, noticed that the biriyani house had been committing such unfair business and cheating their customers by charging an extra Rs 5 for every mineral water bottle they sold. The court also fined them an amount of Rs 50,000 towards punitive damages payable to the District Collector, Hyderabad for unfair trade practice.
