UGC warns students about online Ph.D. programmes offered by Edu-Tech firms

HYDERABAD: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has warned students and the general public not to be misled by advertisements for online Ph.D programmes offered by EduTech Companies in collaboration with Foreign Educational Institutes.

Additionally, the commission urged them to confirm the validity of the PhD programmes in accordance with the UGC Regulations, 2016, prior to admission.

In an official public notice issued on Friday, the UGC and the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) stated that, "In order to maintain the standards for awarding PhD degrees, the UGC has issued the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of MPhil/PhD Degrees) Regulations, 2016. According to UGC regulations, all Indian Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs) must award PhD degrees."

The public notice stated, in reference to the online Ph.D. programmes offered by EduTech Companies, "UGC does not accept such online PhD programmes. Prospective students and the general public are encouraged to confirm the legitimacy of PhD programmes before applying for admission in accordance with UGC Regulations, 2016."
