HYDERABAD: BRS Working President K Taraka Rama Rao and former Energy Minister G Jagadish Reddy have demanded the rejection of proposals to increase electricity tariffs in Telangana. The BRS leaders submitted a petition to the state's Electricity Regulatory Commission, expressing their opposition to the hike.

KTR, speaking on the matter, criticised the state government’s plan to impose an additional Rs 18,500 crore electricity burden on the public. He called the move unjust, particularly given the current challenges facing various sectors. "This heavy financial load on the public is unacceptable," KTR remarked, adding that poor decision-making by the government has already caused crises in agriculture and industry.

The proposal also includes imposing fixed charges on household consumers, further increasing the financial pressure on citizens. KTR pointed out that the government is considering a uniform tariff across all categories in the industrial sector, which would worsen the situation. He alleged that under the guise of 'true-up' charges, the government is conspiring to burden people with additional costs.

KTR emphasised that despite past hardships, previous governments did not impose such heavy electricity tariffs on the public. He also criticised the Congress party, accusing it of making false promises of free electricity while damaging the current power system.
