IMD predicts moderate to heavy rainfall in Telangana, AP till September 7

HYDERABAD: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued yellow and orange alerts in several districts predicting moderate to heavy rains likely to occur in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh till September 7, 2023.

According to IMD, a surface circulation will form at a height of 5.8 km above sea level in the west-central Bay of Bengal near Andhra Pradesh on Sunday. Another surface circulation is likely to form in the northwest Bay of Bengal and surrounding areas by September 4, 2023. Low level winds will blow towards Telangana due to the effect of the period, said IMD, Hyderabad Centre on Sunday.

The IMD also warned that thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are very likely to occur in isolated places in Telangana for the next three days starting from Monday. Heavy rain is very likely to occur in isolated locations in Telangana districts of Adilabad, Komaram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Nirmal, Nizamabad, Jagityal, Rajanna Siricilla, Karimnagar, Peddapalli, Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Mulugu, Warangal, Hanamkonda, Jangaon, Siddipet, Vikarabad, Sangareddy and Kamareddy on Monday.

An orange alert was issued by the IMD and warned that heavy to very heavy rain is very likely to occur in isolated locations in Telangana districts of Adilabad, Komaram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Nirmal, Nizamabad, Jagityal, Rajanna Siricilla, Jangaon Siddipet, Peddapalli, Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Mulugu and Karimnagar districts on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Thunderstorms with lighting lash Hyderabad

Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning lashed Hyderabad in the early hours of Sunday. The thunderstorms were particularly severe between 3 am and 6 am on Sunday, as almost all regions of Hyderabad reported rain. Power supply was disrupted for a while in several parts of the city due to rain.

The Disaster Response Force teams of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) attended to several rain-related complaints in different parts of the city after the downpour during the early hours of Sunday. The DRF relief teams responded and resolved complaints related to water stagnation, uprooted trees and tree branches obstructing the traffic.

The teams pumped out water from low lying areas and took up relief work to bring back normalcy in the rain-hit areas. Meanwhile, Director of Enforcement, Vigilance and Disaster Management, GHMC asked the citizens to dial 040-21111111 or 9000113667 for GHMC-DRF assistance.

Taking to Twitter, T Balaji, popularly known as Telangana Weatherman said that several areas in Hyderabad-Borabanda, Jubilee hills, Madhapur, Gachibowli, KP Housing Board, Manikonda, Shaikpet had recorded downpours of 50-90 mm in short spans. Weather would be cool in Hyderabad but more spells are likely during the afternoon and there were chances of rain in the city during the evening, he said.

In Andhra Pradesh, the IMD predicted light to heavy rains at isolated places in South Coastal Andhra. Strong winds are expected in some areas, while the Rayalaseema region is very likely to receive light rains. Moderate rains are expected in Sathya Sai, Anantapur, Annamayya, Chittoor, Tirupati and Nellore districts.

Taking to Twitter, Sai Kiran, popularly known as Vizag Weatherman said that a dream spell of rain lashed Andhra Pradesh on Saturday night. Within one night, many districts in Andhra Pradesh came out of rainfall deficiency. Prakasam, Nandyal, Kadapa, Nellore, Chittoor , Anantapur, Palnadu , Bapatla and Tirupati saw serious rainfall. Prakasam and Nandyal recorded 175mm of rainfall, while Kadapa recorded 100 to 168mm. Many parts of Nellore, Tirupati, Chittoor also witnessed 100mm plus of rain, he said.
