HYDERABAD: Telangana State Roads and Buildings Minister Vemula Prashanth Reddy on Sunday said that the new Telangana Secretariat would be inaugurated on February 17 on the occasion of Chief Minister KCR's birthday.

The Telangana secretariat is supposed to be inaugurated on the Sankranti. However, it was postponed to February 17 as the works were yet to be completed. Minister Vemula Prashanth Reddy released an official statement on the inauguration of the secretariat to this extent.

Meanwhile, the secretariat building, which was constructed with a green building concept at a cost of Rs.617 crores, is named after Dr. BR Ambedkar, the creator of the Constitution of India.

The Chief Minister considered constructing the Secretariat first at Bison Polo grounds. Accordingly, he tried his best to prevail upon the Ministry of Defence to part with the land so that the State Government could show an alternative site elsewhere. However, the Union Government did not approve of this proposal.

Later, KCR considered constructing the secretariat in Gachibowli area. But, he didn’t take the idea forward as this area was already congested and Secretariat could further clog the place as most employees would have to work there.

After many deliberations with his colleagues, KCR chose to pull down the exiting building and rebuild a new state-of-teh art structure that would suit the requirements of the new state.

The decision was, however, challenged in the High Court. After a series of hearings, the court cleared the demolition and rebuilding of the seat of power of Telangana. Accordingly, KCR had launched the works. He took personal interest in expeditious completion of the works.

The new secretariat would have all facilities for the ministers, officials and staff, apart from hundreds of visitors who would throng the place.

Finally, an iconic and magnificent building has taken shape overlooking the Hussain Sagar lake. A Telangana Martyrs’ memorial, opposite Secretariat, is also nearing completion. A massive 125-foot Ambedkar Statue is also coming near the Secretariat.
