Following the complaint by the irrigation official, the Mahdevpur police booked cases under PDPP sections 3 (Mischief causing damage to public property) and 4 (Mischief causing damage to public property by fire or explosive substance) along with IPC 427. The Irrigation officials expressed apprehension as the incident occurred at a time when the State was facing elections.

They suspected the hand of antisocial elements in the damage to the crucial structure of the KLIP. The Mahdevpur police registered a case and said that they would establish special teams to look into the sabotage angle.
