President Droupadi Murmu conferred the prestigious Bharat Ratna upon former Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao posthumously in New Delhi on Saturday.
HYDERABAD: President Droupadi Murmu conferred the prestigious Bharat Ratna upon former Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao posthumously in New Delhi on Saturday. PV Narasimha Rao’s son Prabhakar Rao received the award on his father’s behalf.
President also conferred Bharat Ratna on former PM Chaudhary Charan Singh posthumously. His son Jayant Singh Chaudhary received the award. Nitya Rao, daughter of eminent agricultural scientist MS Swaminathan, Ramnath Thakur son of former Bihar Chief Minister Karpoori Thakur received the awards on behalf of the recipients.
Earlier, taking to X, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that he was delighted to share that former Prime Minister, PV Narasimha Rao would be honoured with the Bharat Ratna.
“As a distinguished scholar and statesman, Narasimha Rao Garu served India extensively in various capacities. He is equally remembered for his work as Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Union Minister, and as a Member of Parliament and Legislative Assembly for many years. His visionary leadership was instrumental in making India economically advanced, laying a solid foundation for the country's prosperity and growth,” the Prime Minister noted.
He said that Narasimha Rao’s tenure as Prime Minister was marked by significant measures that opened India to global markets, fostering a new era of economic development. “Furthermore, his contributions to India's foreign policy, language, and education sectors underscore his multifaceted legacy as a leader who not only steered India through critical transformations but also enriched its cultural and intellectual heritage,” Narendra Modi said.
