HYDERABAD: Telangana's Rajanna Sircilla district's silk sarees, 'Rajanna Siri Pattu', were launched in New Zealand by MP for Maungakiekie Priyanca Radhakrishnan and Founder of 'Brand Telangana' Sunitha Vijay, taking the work of Sircilla's weavers to a global platform.

A programme was organised in New Zealand on Saturday where 300 people were dressed in Rajanna Siri Pattu to promote the work overseas.

Four years ago, Sunitha Vijay visited Sircilla and witnessed the making of silk sarees for 'Bathukamma' festival. She was extremely impressed by one weaver in particular, Hari Prasad, after which she had helped in taking those sarees to a global market. She helped sell the sarees in India as well as in six countries including the US, the UK and New Zealand.

"When I saw the work of weavers in Sircilla and KTR's efforts in giving these weavers a better life, I also wanted to do something for their community. That's when we saw Hari Prasad's work. We helped him sell in six countries. Now there are 40 people working with him. With the tie-up with New Zealand, the weavers of Sircilla will get a chance at a better life," Sunitha Vijay said.

Like Dharmavaram and Kanchi silk sarees, Sircilla's silk was also given a silk mark with the name 'Rajanna Siri Pattu'.

New Zealand Minister Priyanca Radhakrishnan said that it was commendable to introduce Rajanna Siri pattu to the world. She said that she had seen the silk sarees in magazines and wanted to showcase them to the world.

She said, "Young Minister KTR and the Telangana Government have been a helping hand to the weavers. Such programs will not only benefit the weaver community but also improve the relationship between the two countries."
