HYDERABAD: Tandur red gram, a popular Telangana crop, has become the state's 16th product to be given a geographical indication (GI). A regional variant of pigeon pea (tur dal), Tandur red gram is largely grown in the rain-fed region of Tandur and surrounding Telangana regions.
Yalal Farmers Producers Company Limited had submitted the GI application on September 24, 2020. Prof. Jayashankar Telangana State Agricultural University, on the other hand, assisted with the application.
According to the application, the fertile, deep-black soil in the Tandur region, which also contains enormous amounts of the clay mineral attapulgite and enormous deposits of limestone, is responsible for the unique qualitative attributes of Tandur regram.
After the Yalal Farmers Producer Company Ltd submitted an application in September 2020, the Tandur red gram received the GI registration more than two years later. The country's total number of GI registrations had now reached 432, with over 1,000 applications filed to date.
