HYDERABAD: Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) has appealed to Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of India Rajiv Kumar to dispose of claims and objections before the publication of the final voters list in Telangana.

The TPCC leaders also requested the Commission to postpone the final publication of voter lists from October 4, 2023 to a future date depending upon the time required for publishing a purified voters list. In a letter to the CEC, the TPCC leaders N Uttam Kumar Reddy, D Sridhar Babu and G Niranjan said, "It is unfortunate that the Election Commission (EC) does not have its own machinery to prepare purified voter lists. The EC depends upon the Government machinery for this purpose," they said.

Given the forthcoming Assembly elections in five states including Telangana, the EC issued a schedule for house-to-house verification of voter lists from May 25 to June 23, 2023. The Booth Level Officers (BLOs) were expected to go to each household to verify the voters during this period. But with the celebrations of Telangana formation day from June 2 to June 22, 2023, the house-to-house verification programme was paralysed as the District Election Officer (DEO) to BLO had given priority to the celebrations programmes by setting aside the directions of EC.

The TPCC leaders appealed to the CEC to restore the house number search facility. Thorough enquiry should be made where the form 6 applications are coming abnormally. "Though the enrollment is a continuous process, no fresh enrollment should be allowed after the announcement or the election schedule. We request the concerned supervisors go through the polling station-wise draft rolls physically, which helps us in finding out discrepancies in the list. There are complaints that data enrollers are playing mischief by adding or deleting a certain group of voters with the connivance of vested interests. A vigilance team has to keep an eye on this sort of mischief, " the TPCC leaders said.
