HYDERABAD: As part of their sustainable initiatives and commitment to environmentally friendly operations, GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd (GHIAL) has unveiled a bio-diesel filling station at the Public Transportation Center and an EV (Electric Vehicle) charging station at the Main Car Park (PTC) at Hyderabad airport.

Due to their emphasis on the utilisation of sustainable resources, GHIAL sees these initiatives as crucial steps in the airport's pursuit of carbon neutrality.

The fast-charging station is available for all EV vehicle users who wish to use it. It can charge a four-wheeler from empty to full in about an hour using 30 KW. The charging station, which is app-based, is accessible via Android and iOS mobile devices.

The airport authorities are encouraging the use of electric vehicles by providing EV charging stations. Electric vehicles keep the surrounding airport area's ambient noise level at an ideal level while preventing pollution and increasing the airport's air quality index (AQI).

The GHIAL airport now has a bio-diesel filling station, a first for Indian airports. The only alternative diesel that can operate in any conventional, unmodified diesel engine is biodiesel.

"We at GMR Hyderabad International Airport are committed to operating our airport in a sustainable and environmentally friendly manner," said Mr. Pradeep Panicker, CEO-GHIAL.

"In order to achieve not only carbon neutrality but also to maximise the use of natural resources in the airport ecosystem, we have adopted a number of initiatives in collaboration with all of our stakeholders. We will keep implementing various eco-friendly practices in our pursuit of becoming a zero-carbon emission airport. The ability to deliver sustainable fuel solutions will speed up our efforts to protect the environment at the airport and around it. Sustainable fuel is important for reducing emissions.

In order to maximise the use of natural resources and implement the best waste management practices, Hyderabad International Airport engages in a variety of environmental initiatives. To name a few, there are green buildings, clean energy, reducing carbon emissions, recycling, water conservation, rainwater harvesting, single-use plastics, commissioning solar power plants and cloud-based irrigation control systems. The capacity of GHIAL's solar energy system is now 10 MW. Half of GHIAL's energy needs will be satisfied with the addition of solar power generation. The carbon footprint will be reduced by about 28 lakh kg of carbon dioxide, which is the same as saving 1.4 lakh fully grown trees.
