Lost, stolen phones to be traced by CEIR system to be launched on May 17, says Anjani Kumar

HYDERABAD: Director-General of Police Anjani Kumar here on Tuesday announced that a new tracking system called Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) would be introduced to trace lost or stolen cell phones.

Superintendents of Police (SPs) and Commissioners of Police (CPs) of all districts were informed about the CEIR policy through video conference.

Speaking on the occasion, Anjani Kumar said cell phone had become the most widely used electronic gadget and in this context, the number of cases of theft and missing of cell phones had increased significantly.

He said the police officers should spread awareness among the people in villages and towns about CEIR which was being introduced to locate lost cell phones.

He said the new policy would be launched on May 17 on the occasion of World Telecom Day.

Additional DG, CID, Mahesh M Bhagwat said the police officers were being trained on the system in 750 police stations of the State. He said awareness programmes should be held every day in the circle and division of the police station so that everyone who uses cell phone knows about CEIR.

"If someone comes to the police station with a lost cell phone, the receptionist concerned should enter the complete details in the Central Equipment Identity Register app. If someone who has dropped a cell phone or someone has stolen it, there is a high chance of finding it immediately if he registers it in CEIR.

He said the CEIR application, which has been introduced by the Central government, would help a lot to find such mobiles, even if the cell phone was lost or stolen anywhere.

The Central Equipment Identity Register had been introduced under the auspices of the Ministry of Telecom. Those who lost their mobiles should log in to CEIR website. It would show request for blocking lost/stolen mobile link.

Click on it and upload the lost phone numbers, IMEI numbers, company name, model, and purchased bill. The date where the mobile was lost, state, district and police station complaint details should be entered. Finally user's name, address, identity card, e-mail id, another mobile number for OTP should be given.

After all this is done, an ID number will be received and the respective ID phone status can be known. After finding mobile, the user should go to the same website and click on the link called On Block/Found Mobile.

Once the ID is entered, the phone will be unlocked. The application should be used to provide information to the police in their jurisdiction immediately after the incident.
