SC Classification not in purview of State: Supreme Court

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Wednesday gave a key judgement on the petition filed by Madiga Reservation Porata Samithi (MRPS) on the classification of Scheduled Castes (SC) in the Telugu States. The apex court ruled that the issue was not within the purview of the State Government while making it clear that only the Centre and the Parliament could resolve the issue.

Responding to the Supreme Court's verdict, MRPS President Manda Krishna Madiga said that the issue of SC classification and Madiga sub-castes hangs fire for over 18 years. He said that they had filed a petition demanding a larger bench comprising 7-8 member judges bench in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana to deliberate on the issue.

He also said that the Supreme Court had given notices to the Centre and the Governments of AP and Telangana in connection with the petition and hoped that a solution could be arrived at soon.
