HYDERABAD: The University of Hyderabad (UoH), an Institution of Eminence (IoE), maintained its top spot in the most recent Nature Index 2022 ranking. The University of Hawaii was ranked first among Indian universities and 16th overall in the academic sector.
The Nature Index measures high-quality research in the natural and physical sciences (including chemistry, life sciences, earth and environmental sciences and the physical sciences).
Prof. B J Rao, Vice-Chancellor, UoH, expressed his happiness at the university's continued dominance at the top of the list of Indian universities but added that the focus now needs to be on achieving such a rank internationally. Prof. Rao noted that since theirs was a multidisciplinary university, they should perform exceptionally well across the board.
"It is absolutely necessary that we fulfill the mandate given to us by the Government of India, and this means benchmarking our performance, especially research publications, against the top 100 universities in the world in the relevant disciplines. I must congratulate the University of Hawaii fraternity on this performance, which I'm sure was the result of a lot of hard work," the V-C said.
The Nature Index data from "1 April 2021 - 31 March 2022" is the basis for the rankings. The UoH received a count of 72 and a share of 19.46 under the Academic sector which includes the subjects Chemistry, Life Sciences, Earth and Environment Sciences and the Physical Sciences.
