Failure to pay ESI of staff after deducting from pay: Actress Jayaprada sentenced to 6-month jail term
The Chennai Egmore court sentenced popular actress and former MP Jayaprada along with three others to a six-month jail term
CHENNAI: The Chennai Egmore court sentenced popular actress and former MP Jayaprada along with three others to a six-month jail term and a fine of Rs. 5,000 in the ESI irregularities case.
Reportedly, Jayaprada, who used to run a movie theatre in Royapettah, Chennai, had collected some money from the workers of the theatre in the form of Employee State Insurance (ESI). However, as the theatre saw a decline in profits, it had to be shut down and Jayaprada was not able to return the money to the workers.
The workers then approached the insurance corporation, which then filed a petition against the theatre management in the Chennai Egmore court after which Jayaprada moved the Madras High Court against the petitioners.
The Egmore court, discarding Jayaprada’s request that she would return the money, sentenced her and three other people in the theatre’s management to six months jail.
