HYDERABAD: The Gopalapuram police apprehended a person on charges of smuggling narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances here on Tuesday. The man, identified as Bommareddy Sandeep Reddy, was intercepted near the railway bridge at Chilkalguda when he was carrying one kg of the banned substances.

Sandeep Reddy was reportedly smuggling the contraband stuff to Alugadda Bavi X Roads. Two of his accomplices involved in the offence were absconding.

The accused Bommareddy Sandeep Reddy, a native of Krishnalanka in Vijayawada, got habituated to consuming alcohol and smoking. In 2021, he learnt that one of his childhood friends, Akhil Sai, procured ganja from Gajuvaka of Visakhapatnam and sold the same to needy customers to earn easy money. Akhil Sai used to share ganja with Sandeep and one of his friends Akhil vinay. He, along with Akhil Vinay, became addicted to ganja consumption and Akhil Sai used to supply them occasionally. Akhil Sai used to buy the prohibited stuff for Rs 200 per 100 grams and sell the same for Rs 400.

On August 9, they were on their way to sell marijuana in Hyderabad, when they were stopped by the police near the railway bridge. Akhil Vinay and Akhil Sai managed to escape as soon as they noticed the police approaching. Sandeep Reddy also tried to escape on his bike but the police apprehended him with the backpack containing narcotic substance.

The police seized the one-kg ganja worth approximately Rs 4,000, a portable digital weighing scale and a motorcycle.
