VIJAYAWADA: In a surprising move, Andhra Pradesh Assembly Speaker Thammineni Sitaram has accepted the resignation of TDP Visakhapatnam North MLA Ganta Srinivasa Rao. The decision on Tuesday comes almost three years after Ganta Srinivasa Rao sent in his resignation on February 12, 2021.

Ganta had then resigned to protest against the move by the Centre to privatise the Vizag steel plant. Despite personal requests, the Speaker didn't act on the request.

It is being speculated that the move to accept the resignation now could be because of the ensuing Rajya Sabha polls where the term of three YSRCP members comes to an end in April.

Although the TDP doesn't have enough MLAs to ensure victory for its nominee, the YSRCP seems to be taking no chances as it witnessed cross-voting during MLC elections in its term. The move could weaken TDPs chances of ensuring its nominee's victory.

It is interesting to note that the resignation of Alla Ramakrishna Reddy, who quit the YSRCP as Mangalagiri MLA recently, is yet to be approved by the Speaker.

Meanwhile, it is being reported that Ganta would contest from Nellimarla for the upcoming Assembly elections.
