BAPATLA: A 16-year-old student died on Friday after he was set ablaze by his friend at Razole village in Cherukupalli mandal of Bapatla district.

The deceased was identified as U Amaranath, a class X student at High School in Upalavaripalem. According to reports, the incident happened on Friday morning when Amaranth was on his way to attend tuition classes. At that moment, the accused Venkateswara Reddy who was also a friend of Amarnath followed him with other friends.

After reaching Reddy Palem village, Venkateswara Reddy doused Amaranath in petrol, which he was already carrying and set him ablaze. The motive behind the attack is still not known. Locals and passersby had rushed to Amarnath after hearing his pleas for help. They doused the flames and rushed him to Government General Hospital (GGH) in Guntur.

Upon receiving the information about the incident, a team of police personnel led by SI Konda Reddy rushed to the spot. In his statement, Amarnath told police that Venkateswara Reddy along with others set him ablaze. Amaranth breathed his last after undergoing treatment at Guntur GGH. The accused is absconding. A case has been registered and further investigations are underway.
