DERABAD: The Indian Army's Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) operations in Vijayawada have addressed breaches at three critical locations after heavy water flow caused significant damage.

The breaches, initially ranging from 10 to 15 meters at two sites, were temporarily managed by the civil administration. However, this solution redirected water flow to a third breach, now spanning 80 to 100 meters, with currents reaching up to 8 knots and projected to rise further.

To stabilise the situation, the Army has initiated a two-layer repair strategy using locally fabricated Gabion baskets filled with stones, each 5x2x2 meters in size. These baskets will be stacked and reinforced with a 4-meter-high bund and earthwork. HESCO baskets filled with sandbags will also be tested for their effectiveness.

In a press release, the Indian Army said that its team was committed to controlling the situation and would continue implementing preventive measures as the water flow increased.
