ISRO launches GSLV-F12 from Sriharikota, places navigation satellite NVS-01 in orbit

SRIHARIKOTA: Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), successfully launched GSLV-F12 to place its advanced navigation satellite NVS-01 part of the NavIC series into the designated orbit from Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh on Monday, May 29, 2023.

The GSLV-F12 lifted off from the second launch pad at 10.42 am to place the satellite into the geosynchronous transfer orbit. Within 19 minutes of its liftoff, the rocket successfully placed the satellite at 251 km altitude.

The 2,232-kg Navigation with Indian Constellation (NavIC) is a regional navigation satellite aimed at enhancing India’s navigational and monitoring capabilities.

The NVS-01, powered by two solar arrays can generate 2.4kW power and a lithium-ion battery to support the satellite during the eclipse. According to ISRO, the satellite, equipped with an indigenously developed Rubidium atomic clock from Space Application Centre, Ahmedabad will last for 12 years.

"It is an important technology that only a handful of countries possess," Isro said. The launch on Monday morning was the second from ISRO within a month and the fifth this year.
