MADANAPALLE: With an increase in the stock of tomatoes arriving in Asia’s largest tomato market at Madanapalle, the wholesale price of the vegetable has dropped to Rs 21 a kg here on Saturday.

On an average, about 800-900 Metric Tonnes (MT) of tomatoes arrive in Madanapalle Tomato Market from the local farmers. But the arrivals had dropped to less than 300 MT for the last couple of weeks, after which prices had touched Rs 200 a kg. The arrival of tomatoes had started to pick up for a week, leading to a drop in prices.

Madanapalle Tomato Market Yard Secretary T Abilash said that the increase in the arrivals in tomato producing areas including Anantapur and neighbouring Karnataka State was the major reason for the drop in prices. The first-grade variety tomatoes were being sold at Rs 21 per kg while the second-grade variety was sold between Rs 10 and 15 per kg in Madanapalle, he said.

On Saturday, the Madanapalle market received 500 Metric Tonnes (MT) of produce from the local farmers, against the daily average of around 800-900 MT, Abilash added.
