VISAKHAPATNAM: A special train was flagged off from Visakhapatnam to Rayagada in Odisha on the occasion of International Women’s Day on Wednesday. In case you are thinking what is so special about this, here is the scoop. The entire train was piloted and managed by only women staff members.

East Coast Railway Women Welfare Organisation (ECRWWO) came up with this novel idea as part of its preparations for celebrating International Women’s Day this year. Soon, the idea received the nod from the Railway authorities and, as a result of it, the special train with all women staff left the Visakhapatnam Railway Station on its way to Rayagada in the neighbouring state.

To make the event more special, the train was flagged off, not by senior divisional officials but by the ECRWWO president, vice-presidents and other members. Sahana Kumari was given the responsibility of the train’s loco-pilot with K Nagamani, an assistant loco-pilot, as her deputy. Similarly, M Kalyani was functioning as the train manager while S Ambili, G Atchyutamba, K Santoshi Rao and D Radha were designated as the ticket collectors.

This apart, to make the Women’s Day 2023 more memorable, only women employees discharged duties in all the wings of Visakhapatnam Railway Station including operations, commercial and RCF.
