YSRCP Mandapeta candidate Thota Trimurthulu sentenced in 1996 Dalits tonsure case, gets bail
The case was pending for the last 28 years. On December 28, 1996, Thota Trimurthulu and others allegedly forcibly tonsured the heads of five Dalits to insult them.
VISAKHAPATNAM: A court in Vishakhapatnam delivered a landmark judgement in the infamous Shiromundanam tonsure case that happened way back in 1996.
YSRCP Mandapeta MLA candidate Thota Trimurthulu, along with six accused were served an 18-month jail sentence by the court. Additionally, Trimurthulu was fined Rs 2.5 lakh.
The case was pending for the last 28 years. On December 28, 1996, Thota Trimurthulu and others allegedly forcibly tonsured the heads of five Dalits to insult them in Venkatayapalem village, Ramachandrapuram mandal, which is currently in Konaseema district.
In response, Thota Trimurtulu said that he was granted bail in the case. He said that the opposition was spreading false propaganda and that cadres should not believe in rumours.
