SRIKAKULAM: Heavily soaked in the rains, two residential buildings collapsed in Palasa town late on Thursday. This comes close on the heels of the drowning of two youths in a canal at Vajrapukottur mandal. Under the influence of a low-pressure area formed in Bay of Bengal, heavy rains have been lashing Srikakulam district for the last five days, disrupting normal life with the inundation of low-lying areas and streets.

With the streams and rivulets overflowing, two youths were drowned in the canal at Vajrapukottur. The officials have retrieved the body of one of them and continued search operations for the other. Meanwhile, Minister for Fisheries and Animal Husbandry Seediri Appalraju visited the families of the deceased and assured them of government support.

On the other hand, two houses collapsed in Palasa town due to heavy rains. The debris of the buildings also demolished a tea stall located right adjacent to them. However, a major accident was averted as there were no customers in the tea stall.

With the weather department officials warning of heavy rains for the next two days, people are worried of more hardships.
