HYDERABAD: If we talk about classic films in Telugu, we will definitely discuss the film Sankarabharanam. The film that was released in the year 1980 achieved a classic cult status. Directed by 'Kalatapasvi' K Viswanath, the Telugu film is a musical drama. Edida Nageswara Rao produced the film under the Poornodaya Movie Creations banner. Now, the film bagged a rare honor.
At the 53rd International Film Festival of India, the film was picked in the Indian Classical film category. The film was also screened at the film festival in the presence of many delegates who have come to the film festival from all over the country.
The film tells an interesting story that throws light on the chasm between Classical and Western Music based on the perspective of people from two different generations.
The film earlier won the Prize of the Public at the "Besançon Film Festival of France" in the year 1981. The movie was also screened at the 8th International Film Festival of India, the Tashkent Film Festival, the Asia Pacific Film Festival, the Moscow International Film Festival held in May 1980, and the AISFM Film Festival.
The movie won four National Film Awards, including the Best Film with Mass Appeal, Wholesome Entertainment & Aesthetic Values, the first for a South-Indian film at the 27th National Film Awards. Sankarabharanam also won seven state Nandi Awards.
J. V. Somayajulu, Manju Bhargavi, Chandra Mohan, and Rajyalakshmi played the lead roles in the film. K. V. Mahadevan composed the film's music.
