Telugu Cinema dud at U.S. box office!
Usually, Telugu films have a strong hold over the overseas market, especially in North America
HYDERABAD: Usually, Telugu films have a strong hold over the overseas market, especially in North America. It might be the population or the popularity; regardless of the reason, it was Telugu films that were top of the list. This time, there seems to be a contrary situation.
'Megastar' Chiranjeevi's 'Godfather' is the only major Telugu film that had a big release, and that too was the last-before weekend. With a weak reception and average word of mouth, the film went on to make decent numbers at the box office, but it began to enter its last run. Surprisingly, 'Ponniyin Selvam 1' seems to have a good run, and now, with the release of 'Kantara', there has been a huge change in the dynamics of the market.
While 'Kantara' stormed up at the box office, the rest of the films were just flattened. With the disappointment of 'The Ghost' & a week-old 'Godfather', there were no show-ups for Telugu films. Traders put up their hope for next weekend. Seemingly there might be four releases.
The following are the Cumulative Collections:
#PS1 (Tamil) - $6.35M
#Godfather - $1.26M
#Kantara (Kannada) - $654k +14k (Telugu)
#TheGhost - $138k
