HYDERABAD: Following the success of SS Rajamouli's 'RRR' at the Oscars, India has commenced the selection process for its official entry to the Academy Awards 2024. Several films, including two Telugu films, Balagam and Dasara, are in the race.
The Oscar committee has initiated the process with a series of screenings in Chennai, and the official announcement is anticipated next week. A 17-member committee, chaired by filmmaker Girish Kasaravalli, reviews the entries during the Chennai screenings. The committee has reportedly received more than 22 submissions from various regions across India.
As per the sources, 'Balagam,' 'The Kerala Story,' 'Zwigato,' 'Dasara', and 'Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani' are reportedly in contention. The other movies in the race are 'The Storyteller' (Hindi), 'Music School' (Hindi), 'Mrs. Chatterjee vs. Norway' (Hindi), '12th Fail' (Hindi), 'Viduthalai Part 1' (Tamil), 'Ghoomer' (Hindi), 'Vaalvi' (Marathi), 'Gadar 2' (Hindi), 'Ab Toh Sab Bhagwan Bharose' (Hindi), and 'Baap Lyok' (Marathi).
This year has been particularly noteworthy for Indian cinema, with films like 'RRR' and Guneet Monga's 'The Elephant Whisperers' achieving significant success at the 2023 Academy Awards.
A final decision on India's official Oscar entry is expected to be announced by the end of this month.
