HYDERABAD: Telugu cinema lost one of its finest actors today. Veteran actor Sarath Babu, who played lead and supporting roles in hundreds of films, passed away at the AIG Hospital in Gachibowli of Hyderabad on Monday, May 22, 2023.

Sarath Babu acted in more than 220 films in his illustrious career in multiple languages, mainly in Telugu, Tamil and Kannada. He was shifted from Chennai to Hyderabad a few weeks ago after his health condition worsened. Since then, he was treated at the AIG Hospital for kidney-related ailment and other complications. The end came following multiple organ failure. His condition became critical in the first week of May even as a section of the media speculated that he was no more. But his sister then denied the reports as rumours and clarified that the actor's health had improved.

At around 2 pm on Monday (May 22, 2023), the veteran actor was pronounced dead by the AIG Hospital doctors. 

Sarath Babu was born on July 31, 1951 in Amudalavalasa of Andhra Pradesh. His original name was Satyam Babu Deekshith. He changed his name after entering the film industry.

Sarath Babu made his acting debut with the 1973 film Rama Rajyam. He shot to fame with Singeetham Srinivasa Rao's films Panthulamma and America Ammayi and K Balachander’s directorial Chilakamma Cheppindi. He won three Nandi Awards as Best Supporting Actor for his performances in Seethakoka Chilaka (1981), O Bharya Katha (1988) and Neerajanam (1989). He won the Tamil Nadu State Award as Best Supporting Actor for the 2017 film Malayan.

Sarath Babu married actress Rama Prabha in 1974. She was four years older than him. Their marriage lasted for 14 years before they got divorced in 1988. Later, he married Sneha Nambiar in 1990. His second marriage too fell apart as they got divorced in 2011.

Sarath Babu was last seen in the Tamil film Vasantha Mullai. He also acted in Sr Naresh's upcoming film Malli Pelli where he essayed the role of Superstar Krishna. The film is slated for a grand release on the coming Friday, May 26, 2023.
