Actor Vijay got a major relief from the Madras High Court regarding the case of his BMW car, which was imported from the USA. The court stated that he would be liable to pay the penalty for the entry tax not from 2005 but only from January 29, 2019, to December 2021.

The bench headed by Justice R. Suresh Kumar stated that the Commercial Taxes Department shouldn't have demanded a big amount of Rs. 32.23 lakhs as a penalty for Vijay. It was ordered that instead of levying the tax since 2005, the taxes department should levy it from January 29, 2019.

In January 2022, Vijay filed a petition in the High Court against the notice issued by Commercial Taxes Department, asking him to Rs 7.98 lakh as entry tax and Rs 30.23 lakh as a penalty.

Vijay's advocate stated that the actor has already paid the entry tax of Rs. 7.98 lakhs in December 2021. He challenged the demand of only a penalty. The advocate also added that Vijay had to import BMW at that time because there were no deals for the car in Chennai in 2005.
