HYDERABAD: Hyderabad City Police, which was reorganised 35 years ago in 1987, is strengthened both in numbers and infrastructure in 2023 to match the present-day needs of the bustling megacity.

Giving details of the reorganisation plan named ‘Mega City Policing’, CV Anand, Commissioner of Police, Hyderabad said on Saturday that the population of the city was a mere 25 lakh when the city police was reorganised in 1987. Similarly, vehicles in the city grew from 8,76,126 in 1987 to an astonishing 80,70,852 in 2023.

Even as the city police underwent a semi-reorganisation in 2002, it was grossly inadequate. In 2016, even when the new districts were created in Telangana, Hyderabad city’s police organization remained unchanged.

Hence, a new committee was formed under the chairmanship of the Commissioner of Police with members having three decades of experience in policing. The committee studied each aspect of policing and submitted a report after six months.

For traffic, three DCP Traffic Districts, a new ACP Traffic southeast division taking the total number to seven, 13 new traffic police stations, and five new women PS’s each in central, east, west, southeast, and southwest zones for women’s safety were sanctioned.

The city will also have two new units of the task force, one IT cell, one Hyderabad Narcotic Enforcement Wing, one cybercrime unit, and one unit for the security of the new Secretariat.
